After an initial survey of the building stock and its problems, this research will assess the performance characteristics of riveted and encased steel assemblies by insitu or laboratory testing of original or reconstructed specimens. Their measured properties will then be incorporated in finite element models of complete structures, and these in turn used to predict the probable performance when subjected to earthquake. Remedial measures will then be determined and retrofitted specimens tested to ensure efficacy. To date 4 reports have been completed as follows:
-
Review of previous experimental work, experimental standards, a proposed experimental program and the anticipated results.
-
A literature survey of past and current research on riveted and bolted connections.
-
Seismic retrofit techniques for riveted connections: Discusses hysteretic behaviour of existing non-retrofitted connections and suggested retrofit measures for beam column connections such as welded haunch connections (either bottom or top haunch), welded haunch connections (only bottom haunch), slotted beam web, ductile knee-brace retrofit, selective welding retrofit, steel use-plates retrofit and combined approaches.
-
Seismic retrofitting of steel structures: Discusses local versus global modifications to the structure including issues related to member behaviour, connection behaviour, frame behaviour, curvature ductility, rotation ductility, displacement ductility, failure mode, local buckling, and deformation. Methods considered include encasing columns and/or beams in concrete, strengthening/weakening beam-to column or column-base connections, augmenting composite slab participation, adding braces to one or more bays at each storey, add concrete or steel shear wall(s), adding new MRF system to the exterior of the building, base isolation systems, and supplemental damping devices.
