Limited information is available in literature on the performance of exterior (corner) 3-dimensional (3D) reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column joints with substandard detailing, typical of pre-1970s construction practice. Most of the experimental studies on the seismic assessment and retrofit of existing, poorly detailed, RC beam-column joints have typically concentrated on the 2-dimensional (2D) response thus based on uni-directional cyclic loading testing protocol under constant axial load.
As part of this research, a comprehensive experimental program have been presented aiming to show the effects of varying axial and bi-directional loading on the seismic performance of deficient exterior RC beam-column joints before and after retrofit. Ten exterior beam-column joint subassemblies have been tested, including four as-built specimens and six retrofitted specimens using externally bonded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheets.
Theoretical considerations regarding the retrofit design and methodology along with the validation with experimental results are covered thoroughly in the companion paper. Test results are presented and conclusions are drawn on the basis of observed global and local performance. The significance of the triaxial interaction of varying axial and bidirectional loading effects on the response of retrofitted corner joints as well as the efficiency of the proposed retrofit solution was confirmed by the experimental findings.
