Advanced Concepts & Materials for Seismic Retrofit
Principal Researcher: Stefano Pampanin
Staff involved: Professor Des Bull, Alessandro Palermo
Students involved: Dion Marriott, Kam Weng Yuen
Use and implementation of advanced materials (i.e. Shape Memory Alloys, SMA, Fiber Reinforced Polymers, FRP) and devices (supplemental dampers, as viscous, friction or re-centering device) in combination with advanced concept (i.e. selective weakening proposed earlier) for high performance. Quasi-static and pseudo-dynamic and shake-table tests are on-going to develop new rocking-dissipating solutions for new design (with or without unbonded post-tensioning).
Dion Marriott and Kam Weng Yuen are looking at similar solutions for other subassembly types (beam-column joints and column-to foundation connections). More specifically they have moved ahead on the use of advanced materials and concepts for retrofit. Results have been presented at the European Conference in September 2006 (1st ECEES) and at the NZSEE 2007 Conference. More information is available at the following references:

Development of advanced flag shape hysteresis rule by appropriately combining the aforementioned dissipating properties and self-centering is also going on as a complementary topic in collaboration with Alessandro Palermo and Athol Carr.
