Various life-cycle and total cost-benefits methodologies are available in literature. In addition, the development of the probabilistic-based loss estimation methodology from the PEER research project has led to the opportunity to quantity the 'true' cost-benefit of retrofit solutions.
This research sub-task however is the preliminary step towards establishing a comprehensive industry-focused cost database. We are more concerned with the direct cost of retrofit in terms of dollars and labour-hours. Furthermore, indirect cost of retrofit in terms of invasiveness, downtime and business interruption are also quantified for various retrofit strategies. The data are derived mostly from the research laboratory experience and consultation with industry partners.
These results, coupled with a holistic "benefit" quantification (hazard assessment to structural performance to probable loss avoidance) can give some indication of the economy of the proposed retrofit solutions.
